The process of changing text to correct mistakes or to revise the text is called editing. There are hree ways of correcting mistakes

  • Inserting
  • Deleting
  • Over typing
  • Inserting character:
To insert a character, position the cursor on the screen, at the place where we want to insert a character or text. Then type the character or word as required.

    Deleting character:
Two keys on the keyboard can be used to delete characters. They are Del and back space. The Del key deletes the characters to the right of the cursor position and back space deletes the character to the left of the cursor position. In order to delete a character, move the cursor position to the character (s) which we want to delete using arrow keys or mouse and use del command.

    Over typing:
We can also change a character by typing over it.
By default, word operates in the insert mode. The mode indicates OVR in the status bar is displayed in dim intensity that indicates that the OVR mode is not functional. Double click on the ‘OVR’ in the status bar to select over type mode. When the word is in the over type mode, if a character is typed at the cursor position it will over write the existing character (s) at that cursor position.

    Inserting Words:
If word is in insert mode we can insert any number of words, anywhere in the document. In the insert mode, when we type new characters, these are inserted at the cursor position and any text to the right of the cursor position is pushed to the right. When the current line is filled up, the cursor automatically jumps to the next line. Word automatically reformat the paragraph.

To edit a document we may need to select text. To select text, we can take the help of mouse or use the keyboard short cuts. These enable us to select a particular word, sentence, line, paragraph or even the entire documents. We can select a part of a word or a sentence. After selecting text, we can press ‘del’ key to delete text.

While editing if we make mistakes we can ‘undo’ changes. To undo any change, press CtrlZ, click the undo button or select the undo command from the edit menu or the standard toolbar. Word also supports the redo command that enables us to redo changes that we have undone. We can use undo / redo commands as long as we do not close the file.
