The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London, United Kingdom this time from 27th of July to 12th of August, 2012. During these 17 days London is going to host 26 different types of sports at 34 astonishing venues situated at different parts of United Kingdom. Some of the older venues are going to be modified or renovated and some are going to be built for the sole purpose of the 2012 Games. All the venues for the Olympics have been divided into three major zones; the River zone, the Central Zone and the Olympic Zone.
St James Park
St James Park is an existing venue for football with a capacity of 52,000 seats. This stadium had hosted many exiting football matches and got a great response from fans. So, we can imagine this stadium is well prepared for the football events of Olympic 2012. It is situated right at the centre of the city of Newcastle – upon – Tyne in the eastern north of England.
Not only club football, St James’ Park is also used to host International football events and this stadium is going to be used as a football venue for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
Construction and Features
The gallery of this stadium is covered by cantilever roof which is the largest cantilever roofs in Europe. The cantilever roofs are seen from all places of the town.
The plans to make a stadium were made by a football architect Archibald Leitch in between 1920 to 1930. Due to planning disputes, a small roof was achieved on the east stand. The planning difficulties were continued till about 1960. In 1993, the east stand had been demolished and rebuilt. The Gallow gate end was also reconstructed. The drainage system was installed and a new pitch and the flood lights were put up. In 1995, the stadium became capable to take a crowd of over 37,000 spectators.
During expansion in 1998, the executive boxes in the east stand and 175 seats were demolished. The executive boxes were then replaced at the new Milburn/Leazes complex. The capacity of the stadium increased approximately 52,143 after this modification completed in year 2000.
Costs
The modification in year 2000 spent £42 million. In 2008, a plan was made to construct a Super Casino complex over 1000 sq. ft. Club paid £5 million to MGM Mirage for this purpose. The expansion was proposed in 2007 to develop surrounding area of stadium within cost £300million which would be sanctioned by the City Council.
After The Olympic
No changes will be made to the stadium for the games and will continue to be used as it is even after the Olympics.
