London 2012 Royal Artillery Barracks Venue

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London, United Kingdom from 27th of July to 12th of August, 2012. London will be the host for this year, exhibiting 26 different types of sports at 34 venues all over the country. Some stadiums are modified or yet to be done, some are built only for the 2012 Olympics. The venues can be broadly categorized into 3 zones – the River zone, the Central Zone and the Olympic Zone.

The Royal Artillery Barracks: The Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich in South East London which is called the “home” of the Royal is the largest parade ground of all the existing barracks of United Kingdom. This is now proposed to be used as a venue for the LONDON 2012 Games where mainly Shooting, Paralympics Shooting and Paralympics Archery are decided to be held. Having a remarkable capacity for 7500 spectators, it will be having temporary spectator grandstands. For Pistol and Rifle shooting, four indoor ranges will be constructed. These would be the temporary constructions along with the shot gun ranges which would be built outdoor for the trap and skeet events.

Construction: The construction workforce for the 2012 Olympics in London is to double to 6,000 in the next 12 months keeping in view of the fast construction of the stadium. Despite the dilemma faced by the authority over the decision for the making of the temporary venue at Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich or to use existing facilities at Bisley in Surrey or other sites within an hour’s drive of the Olympic village, for probable ease of the games, the good-old barrack area is opted. A busy schedule will have to involve at least 9000 workers. Till now little work has been done and the rubbish dumping ground is yet to be converted to a place fitted for the games.

Cost: Funded by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor, The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Mayor of London and the London Development Agency, the budget has been set to £18 million.

After the Olympics: London 2012 is deciding with the Government and other key parties to make some opportunities for reusing the elements of the venue and sports equipments after the Games. Then this will either be used as a barrack ground or a future sports ground. After the Olympics the shooting hall will be reassembled elsewhere in the UK.
