What is the Importance of Networking and its Potential Benefits
A computer network is a collection of computers and peripheral devices connected by communication links that allow the network components to work together. The network components may be located at many location or within the the same office. Data communication is the glue that holds the network together.
Purpose:
It allows departments to share hardware. E.g. a high speed laser printer can be shared by several departments, there by decreasing the overall costs. It allows sharing of information. E.g. an insurance file at central place can be accessed from several locations. A network gives each office access to the files and programs in the central computer.
It allows for the electronic transfer of text. Electronic mail system is used to distribute copies of memos and reports. Each user has mail box with some ID’s.It allows for decentralization of various data processing functions. Some data processing and analysis function can be decentralized and performed locally with in the department.
Potential Benefits:
- System evolution-incremental changes with contained impact
- Reliability/availability/survivability-provides backup capability
- Resources sharing-expensive peripherals, hosts, data
- Multi vendor support-customer not locked into a single vendor
- Improved response/performance
- Flexibility of equipment, performance
- Integration of data processing and office automation.
Pitfalls:
- Interoperability is not guaranteed
- Distributed data base raises the problem of integrity, security/ privacy
- Loss of control-difficult to manage and enforce standards.
