How are the tables created in word

    We can easily create a table in word. The table facility in word is very powerful and flexible. We can create a table with any number of rows or columns. We can type any length of text in different cells of the table. word automatically re sizes the table as required. The text entered in the table is formatted by using the usual commands. In word we can create a table by using insert table command from the table menu or by using insert table button on the standard toolbar.

    To create a table:

  • Create a new document by pressing ctrl+N or by clicking the new button on the standard toolbar.
  • Open the table menu and select insert table command.
  • Inserting table dialog box enables us to select the number of rows and columns we want to have in the table we want to insert.

  • Type or select a number of column box to select the number of columns.
  • Type or select a number of a row box.
  • Click OK button or press enter key.
  • The word automatically inserts tables on the document based on the number of rows and columns selected.

    Features available for table creating in MS-Word:

  • Word allows the user to enter text in any cell of the table. Word automatically changes the cell height to accommodate the text we type. Use the tab key to move the cursor to the next cell and shift+tab key to move the cursor to the previous cell.
  • Text entered in the table can be formatted using the normal text formatting commands. We can format the table by showing a border around cells
  • To change width of any column in the table, we can drag the grid lines between columns by using the mouse or using the cell height and width command from the table menu.
  • To automatically select the column width that can accommodate the widest entry in the column, use the table auto fit botton in the cell height and width dialog box. To automatially format a table, use table auto format command from the table menu.
  • To use newspaper style column in the document we can use the columns button on the standard toolbar. We can also use the columns commands on the format menu and then we can choose the number of column we want to have.
  • we can also sort the contents of the table using sort text command from the table menu. The list can be sorted in ascending or descending order.
  • To insert text from an existing document into the current document, use the insert file command. This command can also be used to insert a graphic file.
  • To automatically format document, we can use the auto format command from the format toolbar. After word formats documents we can accept or reject changes. We can also select a new style sheet to be applied with auto format.
